What Is Plastic Injection Molding?

Plastic injection molding is a manufacturing process used to make plastic parts.

Here is the basic idea:

Plastic resin is heated until it melts. The melted plastic is pushed into a custom mold under pressure. The plastic cools inside the mold, taking the shape of the part. Then the finished part is removed, and the process repeats.

This makes injection molding a strong choice for quickly producing many identical parts accurately and consistently.

Plastic injection molding is ideal for:

  • High-volume plastic parts
  • Custom plastic components
  • Close-tolerance molded parts
  • Plastic housings and enclosures
  • Insert molded parts
  • Overmolded parts
  • Complex plastic shapes
  • Long-term production runs
  • Serial production

Bankier Companies has more than 40 years of experience in plastic injection molding and uses machines ranging from 7-ton to 1,500-ton clamp force. This allows the company to produce both small precision components and large, complex plastic housings and enclosures.

Precision Mold Design and Tooling

The mold is one of the most important parts of the injection molding process. A mold controls the shape, size, finish, and repeatability of the final part. If the mold is not designed well, the part may have defects, poor fit, weak areas, or cosmetic issues.

Bankier Companies understands that precision parts begin with precision plastic injection molds and tooling. Our experience with polymer rheology helps us specify and engineer mold designs for each unique application.

Good mold design improves quality, reduces waste, controls costs, and supports repeatable production.

Insert Molding Services

Insert molding is a process where another part, often metal or another component, is placed into the mold before the plastic is injected. The plastic then forms around the insert and locks it into place.

Insert molding can reduce unnecessary assembly steps after molding. It can also improve part strength, accuracy, and reliability.

Bankier Companies offers insert molding and has shuttle press capabilities from 7-ton to 75-ton clamp force. The company has used insert molding to improve product reliability and reduce labor compared to post-molding drilling and insertion.

Overmolding Services

Overmolding is a process that adds one material over another to create a single finished part. This can be useful when a product needs a soft grip, added protection, improved comfort, better sealing, or a second material with a different feel or function.

Overmolding can help improve how a product looks, feels, and performs.

Bankier Companies provides advanced molding capabilities, including overmolding, to support more complex plastic part applications.

High-Volume Plastic Injection Molding

Plastic injection molding is a strong choice when you need many parts produced with the same shape, size, and quality.

Once the mold and process are set up, the same part can be manufactured repeatedly, making injection molding a good fit for serial production and high-volume manufacturing.

High-volume injection molding can help lower the cost per part, speed up production cycles, maintain consistent part quality, improve repeatability, support scalable manufacturing, reduce material waste, and assist with long-term supply planning.

It is often used when companies need thousands or even millions of parts and is widely used across industries such as medical, automotive, consumer goods, electronics, packaging, aerospace, and industrial manufacturing.

Close-Tolerance Injection Molding

Some plastic parts must meet very tight requirements. A small size difference can cause problems with fit, function, assembly, or product performance.

Bankier Companies uses CMM measurement, process controls, and visual inspection to support tight dimensional accuracy, clean surface finishes, and consistent molded parts.

How the Injection Molding Process Works

Two technicians from Bankier companies work on plastic production.Injection molding has several main steps.

1. Product Design: This is where the part’s shape, size, function, material, surface finish, and production goals are reviewed. Important design details may include wall thickness, tolerances, gate location, draft angles, texture, finish, and material selection. Good planning at this stage helps prevent extra costs later.

2. Mold and Tooling Design: Next, the mold is designed. The mold must be built to match the part and support repeatable production. A well-designed mold helps create better parts, reduce defects, improve surface finish, and keep production running smoothly.

3. Manufacturing Setup: Once the mold is ready, the injection molding machine is prepared. Resin pellets are loaded, heated, melted, and pushed into the mold.

4. Clamping, Injection, Cooling, and Ejection: The mold closes and clamps shut. Melted plastic is injected into the mold cavity. The plastic cools and hardens. Then the mold opens, and the finished part is ejected.

Quality Inspection for Injection Molded Parts

Quality is important in every injection molding project.

A part should not only look right. It should fit, function, and perform as expected.

Bankier Companies uses strong quality and inspection systems to support reliable molded parts. Inspection may include CMM measurement, visual inspection, dimensional checks, and strict process controls.

Our status as an ISO 9001:2015 certified mold maker and injection molding manufacturer ensures you receive consistent quality from concept to production.

Benefits of Plastic Injection Molding

Plastic injection molding offers many benefits for businesses that need reliable plastic parts.

  • Cost-Effective Production: After the mold is made, injection molding can produce parts quickly and efficiently. For higher-volume projects, this can lower the cost per part.
  • High Repeatability: Injection molding allows the same part to be made again and again with consistent results.
  • Strong Design Flexibility: The process can support complex shapes, detailed features, custom textures, and a variety of material options.
  • Fast Production Cycles: Once the mold and process are ready, parts can be made quickly. This helps support deadlines and larger production needs.
  • Low Material Waste: The process is designed to use material efficiently. Extra plastic may often be recycled or reused, depending on the material and project.
  • Strong Surface Finish: Injection-molded parts can have a clean, finished appearance with little or no extra finishing work.
